Krill biomass estimation: Sampling and measurement variability

نویسندگان

چکیده

Krill are the subject of growing commercial fisheries and therefore management is necessary to ensure long-term sustainability. catch limits, set by Commission for Conservation Antarctic Marine Living Resources, based on absolute krill biomass, estimated from acoustic-trawl surveys. In this work, we develop a method determining an error budget surveys which includes sampling measurement variability. We use our examine sensitivity biomass estimates parameters in acoustic target strength (TS) models, length frequency distribution wetmass relationships derived net data. determined that average coefficient variation ( CV ) was 17.7% due scaling observations density 5.3%. found large proportion variability orientation distribution, parameter TS model. Orientation distributions with narrow standard deviations were emphasise results nulls relationship, has potential lead biologically implausible results.

Variability in krill biomass links harvesting and climate warming to penguin population changes in Antarctica.

The West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) and adjacent Scotia Sea support abundant wildlife populations, many of which were nearly extirpated by humans. This region is also among the fastest-warming areas on the planet, with 5-6 °C increases in mean winter air temperatures and associated decreases in winter sea-ice cover. These biological and physical perturbations have affected the ecosystem profound...

Point Sampling to Stratify Biomass Variability in Sagebrush Steppe Vegetation

Cover and yield are two of the most commonly monitored plant attributes in rangeland vegetation surveys. These variables are usually highly correlated and many previous authors have suggested point-intercept estimates of plant cover could be used as a surrogate for more expensive and destructive methods of estimating plant biomass. When measurement variables are highly correlated, double sampli...

Estimation of measurement uncertainty arising from sampling

Foreword Uncertainty of measurement is the most important single parameter that describes the quality of measurements. This is because uncertainty fundamentally affects the decisions that can be made that are based upon the measurement value. Significant progress has been made in devising procedures to estimate the uncertainty that originates in the analytical portion of the measurement, and gu...

Improving Woody Biomass Estimation Efficiency Using Double Sampling

Although double sampling has been shown to be an effective method to estimate timber volume in forest inventories, only a limited body of research has tested the effectiveness of double sampling on forest biomass estimation. From forest biomass inventories collected over 9,683 ha using systematic point sampling, we examined how a double sampling scheme would have affected precision and efficien...

Sampling Strategies for Efficient Estimation of Tree Foliage Biomass

Conifer crowns can be highly variable both within and between trees, particularly with respect to foliage biomass and leaf area. A variety of sampling schemes have been used to estimate biomass and leaf area at the individual tree and stand scales. Rarely has the effectiveness of these sampling schemes been compared across stands or even across species. In addition, sample size estimates for ac...
